New Boat Projects Getting Started
Over the Christmas break we are going to start on two new boat projects to keep us busy through the cold winter months.
Black Brant III Duck Hunting Boat – The BBIII (Black Brant III) is a 14′ duck hunting design by Sam Devlin of Devlin Designs in Washington. Built primarily of marine grade plywood in the ‘stitch and glue’ construction method our crew will learn about lofting (or drawing a boat full size from smaller plans), cutting matching plywood sides, epoxy and fiberglass use and techniques, general marine construction and of course, everyone’s favorite the finishing and painting process.
2nd Prospector Canoe – While we still have the molds up and on the strongback we are going to start and complete a second Prospector Canoe for sale by commission, raffle or auction – that’s still to be determined. This is a 16′ long by 3′ wide canoe built primarily of western Red Cedar strips. Skills learned in this project will be machining big pieces of wood into smaller cedar strips, fairing the shape of the hull to a pleasing shape while gluing all these strips together, carving of some of the ‘furniture’ (crosspieces, etc), decking and even some chair caning for the seats. Once again careful preparation of the surface will lead to another outstanding varnish finish job by our crew.
We need students to help build this!
We are looking for more students to help with these two projects. We are looking for kids who want to have a lot of fun and are committed to the process of learning! Check out of our student sign up page here and get started on this great adventure! But hurry because spots are limited to the first three to sign up!
